The Colossal Clock Conundrum: Bats in Meriwether County, GA

Since bats only need about ¼ of an inch gap to gain entrance to an area, keeping them out can be hard.  Especially when it’s in a place where people don’t often go, if ever.  Those places can have infestation populations grow quickly and cause a lot of damage before it is ever noticed.  Given our rates of success and experience in the wildlife business, we are often contacted by government officials that need help with wildlife on government property.  These calls come in more frequently than you would think, but usually the problems are minor and easy to fix because the places are used so often.  When we got a call about a possible bat problem at a building in town, we were expecting something small like a bat had gotten into the building and was roosting. What we found was much, MUCH bigger.

It turns out the problem wasn’t inside of the building at all, but inside of the large clock outside.  A groundskeeper had started to notice the hundreds and hundreds of little black dots all over the grounds and covering the side of the clock, so he called us.  The bats were getting in through several small holes around all sides of the clock so we sealed about half of the entrances we could fine and set up vents in the other half.  We ended up venting out thousands of bats from behind that clock, but that wasn’t the worst part.  Since the colony was so large we knew there was going to be a lot of clean-up, but it was astronomical.

Over the next few weeks, we hauled dumpsters in and out on trailers constantly.  We ended up removing 4,700 POUNDS of bat guano from the clock.  It was a huge job, but we were able to vent it, clean it, and finish it leaving no bat behind.

We resolve many types of wildlife control conflicts in Meriwether County and surrounding areas. Give me a call if you need expert animal removal and/or live wildlife trapping. We can also perform an inspection of your property to evaluate the problem.

The situations we resolve and main trapping and removal services we provide are: raccoon families in attics and chimneys, woodpeckers drilling siding. mud swallow nests on stucco, rats or squirrels thumping and bumping around inside walls and in attics, voles and gophers destroying lawns, skunks stealing pet food, bat infestations, and snakes living in crawlspaces and stone walls.

Along with physical damage and disease, wild animals also bring along disturbance and nuisance with all their commotion and smell. Raccoons and rats will fight all night and keep people awake; baby raccoons chirp and chitter like little birds; skunk smell takes the cake, but have you ever smelled a dead animal in your ventilation system? We have seen much, much more than these problems, but that is a general idea of the kinds of problems that I and my professional wildlife removal operators are prepared to solve.

Not only do my technicians and I trap and remove problem wild animals, we do a lot of other dirty work, too. The Case of the Sudden Skunk

People do weird things for unexplained reasons all the time, but it’s when they use wildlife to better their schemes that I get really confused.  Why you would want to catch a wild animal and release it on someone else is beyond me.  So what would make a person decide to catch a wild skunk, and release it in a police station’s parking garage? They must have had some serious frustration built up to go out and both find and catch a skunk in Georgia, and to also release it on the police.

It was kind of odd to receive a call from a police dispatcher instead of calling them, quite a turn of events.  I almost thought the woman was joking when she said two officers had been sprayed by a skunk that was roaming the parking garage and that they needed our services immediately, so they got our services immediately.  Since we were trying to get it out as soon as possible, the likelihood of a regular skunk trap working as quickly as we needed it too was not fantastic.  This was definitely one of my more creative jobs.

First we had to locate the skunk in the garage, it was a little slow moving since no one else wanted to be sprayed.  After about 15 minutes we found it in between two cop cars, nestled up and sleeping.  It couldn’t have been a more perfect layout; the skunk was in a place it felt safe, but it was also in a place where I could move up to it without too much trouble.  The only issue I had was how exactly was I going to catch it? If I just grabbed it I would be sprayed for sure, and I didn’t have too much faith in my plan to wake it up and try to lure it into the trap I had brought.  Then I remembered the trash bin sitting just inside of the station I had seen earlier, and my plan fell into place.

I quietly snuck around one of the parked cars with the waste basket in my hand; as quickly and carefully as possible, I dropped the trash can over the sleeping skunk and held it down.

I realized that I didn’t have a second part to this plan so I looked around for something else to use, luckily there was a piece of cardboard in the back of my truck so I had one of the officers watching hand it to me.  Then I slid the cardboard underneath the trash can and its inhabitant and picked it up.  After that we quickly took the skunk somewhere more suitable than a parking garage, and released it.  Quite a wild ride, but a very good story.  And for the record, please do NOT release wild animals anywhere they do not belong.
